SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – Starting this fall, Illinois public elementary and middle schools will no longer sell candy, chips and soda during the school day.
The Illinois Board of Education approved the measure in hopes of improving student nutrition, health, attendance and behavior. High schools, however, will be exempt.
Despite the ban passing by a 7-2 vote, local school officials are concerned about the impact it will have on their budgets. Vending machine sales are a source of funding for many of the districts.
