Illinois District Implements Safety Plan for 53 Schools

ELGIN, Ill.

After two years of preparation, the Elgin Area School District U-46 in Illinois has solidified a comprehensive safety plan by adopting the Incident Management System, an emergency response plan developed by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

The district, which is comprised of 53 schools, will now be eligible to apply for federal safety grants and will be required to participate in prevention, mitigation and training exercises with emergency responders.

According to the district’s safety coordinator, 100 percent of staff members will receive lockdown and crisis management training. The staff will utilize communication equipment including a rapid response system, two-way radios and emergency red phones during a crisis.
