Illinois College to Arm Campus Safety Officers

Published: June 1, 2008

GRAYSLAKE, Ill. – After 10 years of discussion, security officers at the College of Lake County (CLC) will now be allowed to carry guns by Oct. 1, according to news reports.

CLC officials voted unanimously May 27 to convert their campus safety department into a police department, although the change does not come without reservations from staff who believe carrying guns will not prevent a crisis from happening.

Institution officials believe arming the officers with guns will cost the school an additional $200 for each of the 14 officers per year for liability insurance. It will also cost $18,000 for the purchase of firearms and new badges, as well as psychological testing.

Additionally, officers will receive firearms training four times a year.
