Ill. School District Repeals Transgender Protection Policy

Published: October 21, 2012

AURORA, Ill. — The East Aurora School District 131 has rescinded an amendment to an anti-bullying policy that would have added specific procedures to protect transgender students Oct. 19, according to Windy City Media Group.

The district unanimously approved the policy on Oct. 15; however, criticism from community members prompted board members to reconsider the plan, the Chicago Sun-Times reports. Numerous civil rights organizations, who opposed the repeal, have blamed the Illinois Family Institute for inciting the controversy after the group condemned the policy on its Web site.

District board members will revisit the policy at its regular board meeting on Nov. 5.
