The International Association for Healthcare Security and Safety (IAHSS) Council on Guidelines released on Monday a draft guidance document on alternate care sites- medical surge capacity. The draft guideline was created for IAHSS members and an American Institute of Architects (AIA) national task force.
“The AIA is working to quickly develop guidance to support what is happening around the U.S. to turn convention centers, hotels and other facilities beyond their hospital campus into alternative care sites,” the IAHSS said in a statement.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Alternate Care Sites (ACS) have been created to permit healthcare officials to provide medical care for injured or sick patients. This document has been drafted to provide guidance to healthcare facilities to help them prepare alternate care sites.

The IAHSS emphasized that this is a draft document, noting that it is subject to change.
“The IAHSS Council on Guidelines wanted to release this draft document for anyone to use as they consider opening surge sites,” the association said. “The reference link in the document provides additional guidance and background information. Moving forward, this draft will follow the proper IAHSS development and vetting process, including asking for IAHSS member input, industry feedback and IAHSS Board approval.”
