Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo spoke about his department’s response to Hurricane Harvey at Campus Safety Conference Texas June 25.

As the keynote speaker of the conference, Acevedo recounted the massive effort it took his community to respond to the storm, which was originally predicted to bring 22 inches of rain but ended up bringing more than twice that amount.

Following his talk, Acevedo spoke with Campus Safety about the challenges his department faced and lessons it learned from Hurricane Harvey before giving advice to other emergency management officials. His advice is included below:

“First and foremost, make sure that your people understand the threat, not just to themselves but to their family, and make sure you provide them with information to keep their own family safe,” Acevedo said. “One of the things you have to do to make sure your people can focus on their mission is to make sure their own families are taken care of. That starts with educating your own folks and reminding them, leading into any natural disaster that may be looming, to have their own families ready.”
