WALDORF, Md. — Hundreds of students fell ill after attending a Southern Maryland Blue Crabs game on June 9. The illness was caused by exposure to excessive heat.
Some of the students were taken to hospitals for treatment after attending the game as part of a field trip, Southern Maryland Newspapers Online reports. Eleven students from St. Mary’s public schools were taken to St. Mary’s Hospital’s emergency room and several may have sought treatment after being bused back to their school. Sixteen students from Charles County were taken by ambulance directly from the stadium.
Part of a club in the stadium was partitioned off to serve as one of three triage centers for students. All 17 emergency medical services station in Charles County responded to the incident. However, the number of ill students was too high and school staff members with EMT certification were called to the stadium.
