Houston College Question Police Chief’s Leadership

HOUSTON—Houston Community College’s (HCC) police chief is coming under fire following the dismissal of at least three officers.

Since being hired in August 2008, Police Chief Gregory Cunningham has fired at least three officers and a fourth has been placed on administrative leave since January, according to Chron.com. Two of the three officers fired have filed complaints with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), claiming racial, gender and age discrimination. They have requested reinstatement, and the agency has not ruled on either case.

The HCC governing board is investigating the case after it received a series of letters and personal pleas from officers in the past six months complaining about Cunningham.

Additionally, some critics say Cunningham’s decision to create a heavily armed tactical unit could make the district’s six colleges and 32 satellite locations less secure because only five officers have been trained for the unit. However, school officials maintain that the unit is necessary for campus security.
