Hospital Police Officer Shoots Patient During Struggle

A physical altercation resulted in a Lynchburg police officer shooting a patient at a hospital Jan. 11.

Officer Wes Gillespie was in the Dillard building of Centra Lynchburg General Hospital when he got into an altercation with 28-year-old patient Jonathan Warner, according to wdbj7.com.

During the altercation, Warner took Gillespie’s Taser and assaulted both the officer and another hospital employee. Gillespie then opened fire on Warner, who was holding the officer’s Taser at the time.

Police didn’t give an update on Warner’s condition in their latest statement, although Warner was initially listed in critical condition immediately after the incident.

The building where the assault took place is located in a separate facility from the rest of the hospital and no other patients were believed to be in danger.

The Lynchburg Police Department has opened an investigation into the incident.
