AURORA, Ill.—The family of a 78-year-old Provena Mercy Medical Center patient is questioning hospital security procedures after the patient was allegedly attacked with a butter knife by her roommate’s visitor.
The victim, whose name has not been released, was reportedly attacked around 6:20 p.m. on Aug. 31 by her roommate’s 39-year-old son Darrell Franklin, according to ChicagoBreakingNews.com. The victim is said to be in fair condition.
Hospital officials said Franklin was visiting his mother with a group of people when he became distressed, left the room, returned with a butter knife and attacked the victim.
The victim’s family has questioned hospital personnel on how many individuals were in the room during the incident, and how many people the hospital allows in the room. Officials were unsure of how many people were present during the attack; however, they said security and members of the suspect’s family were subduing him when authorities arrived.
Additionally, hospital personnel said changes in security and new protocols would not have changed the outcome of the incident. The hospital is currently investigating the case.
Franklin has been charged with aggravated battery to a senior citizen and aggravated battery.
