Hospital Security Guard Arrested, Fired for Abusing Screaming Patient

Published: April 29, 2013

LONGMONT, Colo. — A contract security guard at Longmont United Hospital was arrested on suspicion of misdemeanor harassment and misdemeanor menacing after he lost his temper with a screaming mental health patient.

Brian Burcar is accused of hurling obscenities at a female patient at the hospital on Friday in an effort to get her to stop screaming. Later, a social worker saw him pick up a pillow and place it over the patient’s face, TimesCall.com reports.

Burcar later told police that the patient was abusive to staff, and denied holding the pillow on the victim’s face; he claimed that he only dropped the pillow on the patient’s face, telling her to scream into it if she insisted on screaming.

Burcar has been fired from his position.
