BURLEY, Idaho – A southern Idaho hospital is incorporating patient-confirmed access control to help deter newborn abductions.
Cassia Regional Medical Center will require birthing center visitors to use a phone and face a camera to attain patient permission to be allowed inside a locked door area. This is the latest in several recent actions taken nationwide by hospitals to prevent newborn abductions. As reported by CS, a Massachusetts hospital stopped public birth announcements, while another in New York state now tags its newborns with radio transmitters.
The new security measure at Cassia Regional begins May 17. According to an Associated Press report, more than 700 babies were delivered in 2006 at the birthing center.
