The death of an elderly man inside a psychiatric unit at Botsford Hospital is being ruled a homicide.

Walter Gajewski, 92, was pronounced dead Jan. 8 after allegedly being set on fire inside the hospital. A nurse found the patient lying on the floor of his room, reports the Detroit Free Press. Gajewski was a dementia patient who had been at the facility for two weeks.

Investigators do not believe the fire was caused by hospital equipment or smoking. Nothing else inside the room was on fire.

Investigators are interviewing hospital staff and family members who had access to the room. According to the news report, the Geropsychiatry unit is locked and monitored by a camera; however, the unit does not have more extensive electronic surveillance.
