HIV-Positive Man Who Bit Hospital Guard Arrested for Attempted Murder

DES MOINES, Iowa – A man who is HIV-positive has been charged with attempted murder after attacking and biting a hospital security guard.

On Nov. 24, Richard Eugene Delaney was driven to the emergency room of Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines. After refusing to give his information to hospital staff, Delaney became agitated and began threatening that he could and would kill by transmitting the HIV virus with a bite.

A police officer and security guard wrestled Delaney to the ground, but not before Delaney managed to bite the guard. Delaney continued to threaten everyone even as he was strapped to a bed and pushed to the emergency room.

Soon after the incident, Delaney was charged with willful injury and harassment. The police have now elevated the charges to attempted murder.
