TULSA – A Hillcrest Medical Center security officer fatally shot a man Friday, who he suspected was trying to break into cars in the hospital parking lot.

The officer, whose name has not been released, learned from a bystander that a man was tampering with vehicles in the Oklahoma Heart Institute parking lot, which is at the Hillcrest complex. The officer then confronted the man.

The man, whom the officer believed to be armed, then attempted to run, prompting the officer to pepper-spray the suspect. When the man resisted the officer’s efforts to subdue him, the officer shot the man, Tulsa World reports.

Authorities discovered a semiautomatic weapon at the scene and collected it for evidence.
