High School Football Player Killed By Head Injury

HOMER, N.Y. — A Phoenix High School student died Sept. 14 after suffering a head injury during a varsity game against a Homer Central School District high school football team.

The student was hit hard and lay face down after the play, the Associated Press reports. He was able to sit up and talk, but complained of a headache and collapsed when he tried to stand. Doctors at a large medical center where the student was transferred were unable to save his life.

In New York, a law signed this summer will require school coaches to bench student athletes who have symptoms of a concussion. Those students can only play again after they are symptom free for 24 hours and are cleared in writing by a doctor.
