CAMBRIDGE, Mass — To curb laptop theft on campus, Harvard University will give students the option to install a security software on their notebook computers.
As many as 90 laptops are stolen from campus annually, which prompted the Harvard University Police Department (HUPD) to hire security company, Absolute Software, to embed a tracking system in students’ laptops, Boston.com reports. If a laptop is stolen, the software will track and then locate the computer. Absolute Software will then work with local authorities to recover the laptop.
The service will cost $20 for four years. Additionally, students will be able to remotely lock their computers and delete files to protect themselves from identity theft.
