Harvard Implements New ID System

Published: July 17, 2008

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Harvard University will implement a new identification card system that will use contactless Smartcard technology in the fall to counter a security breach that occurred less than a year ago.

A student at the university, Theodore Pak, made duplicates of the Harvard University ID (HUID) cards belonging to the president of the university, assistant dean of the college and Dunster House superintendent.

The new cards will have data encrypted on them, making it more difficult to hack into the system. It will also allow the system to track who has been given access to each building. Previous cards were not encrypted.
