TULSA, Okla. — Bullying has become the greatest threat to student safety in Tulsa area schools, according to data collected by the Oklahoma State Department of Education.
Prior to the 2010-11 school year, the term “bullying” was not used in the Tulsa Public Schools policy manual, Tulsa World reports. Since then, there has been a large increase in the number of bullying incidents reported by the district: from 3,682 in 2009-10 to 27,693 in 2010-11.
School officials are resorting to more serious discipline – such as suspensions instead of peer mediation.
Owasso and Union school districts also reported recent increases in bullying, and although Broken Arrow saw bullying decline, that school system has seen a huge spike in assaults.
