RALEIGH, N.C. — Campus police at North Carolina State University recently began a “Bait Bikes” program to catch would-be bike thieves. Each bait bike is equipped with a GPS tracking device and placed in an area where significant numbers of bikes have been stolen in the past.
In 2009, 111 bikes were stolen from campus. That number decreased slightly in 2010 to 91, the Technician reports. Campus Police Sergeant Ian Kendrick told the news source that since recently starting the new program, one arrest has already been made.
Police previously used surveillance to catch bike thieves, but it was too man-power intensive. The GPS-equipped bait bikes give the police more flexibility.
