Georgia State Integrates Cameras with City Police

The integration was completed to help improve campus and community security.

Georgia State University will allow the Atlanta Police Department to access video footage from its security cameras on campus as part of a new integrated security system.

All exterior video surveillance cameras on the GSU campus were recently fully integrated into the Atlanta Police Department’s Operation Shield Video Integration Center. The new system will allow city police to view footage from 253 surveillance cameras in total.

“Georgia State University sits in the heart of Atlanta and through this partnership we can monitor the areas and provide an extra layer of security to protect Georgia State students, faculty and staff,” Atlanta Police Chief George Turner said.

Chief Turner said he thinks the partnership of the two police departments makes the campus and its surrounding community more secure. The camera access will help deter crimes, aid investigations and speed up emergency response, according to the chief.

The GSU Police Department is composed of 85 state-certified police officers, 35 full time security guards, 15 part time security guards, 10 communication dispatchers and eight supporting staff members.

The APD currently oversees a network of more than 6,000 cameras.
