A visitor to DeKalb County (Ga.) Medical Center’s Hillandale campus tried to shoot its security officers on Thursday.
The incident began when the unidentified suspect took his girlfriend to the emergency room who was complaining of chest pains. The man became angry soon after and demanded she be seen immediately, reports CBS46.
Unarmed security officers tried to de-escalate the situation, but as the suspect became more irate, one guard showed him that he was carrying a baton. The officers then asked the man to leave.
The suspect returned a short time later and was met by security officers in front of the ER entrance. When they refused to let him inside, he pulled out a gun and pulled the trigger, but the weapon jammed.
An officer then hit the suspect’s hand with his baton, which changed the angle of the gun so that the firearm didn’t hit anyone when the suspect fired his gun again. An officer fell down when the gun was firing, which authorities say might have led the suspect to believe he had shot one of the officers.
The suspect then fled the scene. Police are still looking for the man.
