WASHINGTON, Fifteen subcontracted campus security guards petitioned Georgetown University Sept. 29 for increased wages.
The guards, who are contracted by Georgetown through Allied-Barton Security Services, have joined with members of the Georgetown Solidarity Committee (GSM) to request they receive at least $13 per hour in salary and benefits. Currently, they make $9.77 per hour, which includes health coverage and life insurance.
Backers of the petition say although Allied-Baron provides its employees with benefits, they do not make up the $3.23 difference between the guards’ base salary and the total compensation required by Georgetown’s Just Employment Policy.
The wage increase demand comes after the university’s decision last March to raise all contracted workers’ pay and benefits to at least $13 an hour from $11.33 by July. The school plans an additional boost in compensation to $14 per hour by July 2007.
Georgetown representatives say all Allied contract security guards are receiving compensation in line with the school’s Just Employment Policy.
Petition backers say they will continue to work on this issue, attempting to unionize.
