Genesee County, Mich., Schools Battle 53% Increase in Disciplinary Referrals

Genesee County, Mich, schools have experienced a 53-percent increase in classroom distractions in the past year. The Center for Educational Performance and Information recorded more than 75,500 student disciplinary referrals, including assaults and alcohol use both on school property and at school-sponsored events.

Among the findings, assaults jumped 54 percent countywide from 1,805 incidents in the 2006-07 school year to 2,776 incidents.

The Flint district, the largest school district in the county, reported 21,000 disciplinary referrals during the 2007-2008 school year and averaged more than seven assaults a day.
