HAMPTON, Va. — Hampton University police, along with the police department here, are investigating the drowning death of a 17-year-old freshman.
David Esan drowned March 20 during a “Freshman Week” pool party at the school, HamptonRoads.com reports. The university released a statement explaining that two school administrators, three campus police officers and three certified lifeguards were present during the incident.
The victim’s family, however, questioned the university’s protocol to ensure safety for students at the pool. The requested that the city police investigate the incident, independent from the campus police investigation, which prompted the collaboration between the two agencies.
