Three fraternities at Coastal Carolina University have been suspended amidst complaints of hazing, according to a report by The Slate. The fraternities involved are chapters of Kappa Sigma, Tau Kappa Epsilon and Pi Kappa Phi.
The university will not say exactly what prompted an investigation into what has been described as “questionable new member education activities.” However, Coastal spokeswoman Martha Hunn did say no reports were filed with university police in connection with the accusations. Conway and Horry County Police also say they have not received any incident reports. Hunn confirmed that several allegations were made through an anonymous hazing report university officials added to the website earlier this year.
The university’s vice president for student affairs sent a letter to all Greek organizations informing them that the university was reviewing complaints of hazing on campus and that the suspensions were made in response to the accusations. Coastal Carolina University also canceled new member and social activities at other fraternities in the Interfraternity Council.
Coastal has 17 Greek organizations, including nine fraternities that are divided into two groups. The Interfraternity Council consists of five organizations, including the three under suspension. Four are part of the National Panhellenic Conference Council.
The future of the suspended fraternities depends upon what information university administrators uncover. Coincidentally, the suspensions were handed down during National Hazing Prevention Week.
