LANCASTER, Pa. – Franklin & Marshall College sworn campus security officers will be armed when the fall semester begins, the school’s Board of Trustees voted on Monday.
University officials decided to arm the officers, who have the same training as municipal officers, after survey results revealed that that students expect the same level of protection from campus police as from a municipal force in light of mass shootings at other campuses nationwide, Lancaster Online reports.
Before the department’s 19 sworn officers receive their weapons, they must undergo additional training of the specific handguns they will carry, as well as undergo psychological and other testing.
The remaining four security officers who are not trained police will not carry any weapons.
