FORT LEE, N.J. – The Fort Lee School District will install 98 surveillance cameras throughout all six of its schools for $234,500.
The cameras will be place on the interior and exterior of school buildings and will begin recording when they sense movement, NorthJersey.com reports. Additionally, recordings will be stored for up to 30 days.
The school board set funds aside nearly a year after the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School to improve security on campuses. Some residents initially wanted to add armed security guards, but after public meetings, many opted to install surveillance cameras instead.
Within the past year, district officials have partnered up with local police and reviewed a security audit report. Additionally, the district has hired a second school resource officer and retrained school crossing guards to spot suspicious behavior.
