Former Professor Pleads No Contest to Sexual Assault Charge
NEW BRITAIN, Conn. — A former professor and chief diversity officer at Central Connecticut State University pleaded no contest on March 9 to a charge of sexually assaulting a student. Moises Salinas, a native of Mexico, was sentenced to a one-year suspended jail sentence on the condition that he resigns from his job, never teaches again and leaves the country.
Salinas assaulted Krystal Rich, 23, outside of a restaurant on Feb. 18, 2010, the Hartford Courant reports. Salinas, who had agreed to write Rich a letter of recommendation for graduate school, invited Rich out to lunch via Facebook to discuss the student’s plans for graduation.
Initially, Salinas drove Rich to a bar but quickly decided to go to another establishment because, according to Rich, he knew too many people there. Once inside the restaurant, Salinas began rubbing Rich’s thigh and hand. Upon returning to the car, Salinas attempted to grab Rich’s crotch and kiss her.
Rich reported the incident the following day to her college advisor. Her advisor contacted university officials who launched an investigation. The local police were contacted on April 29 and Salinas was taken into custody and placed on administrative leave on Aug. 31.
Carolyn A Magnan, a lawyer for the university, told the news source that Salinas attempted to alter E-mails to make them appear as if Rich sent them to him. Magnan recommended that human resources take action against Salinas. He was removed as the university’s chief diversity officer in March 2010, but continued to teach until his arrest.
