UTICA, N.Y. — A former school district police officer pleaded guilty to third-degree grand larceny in Oneida County Court on Feb. 14. Thomas Hubal wrongfully received more than $88,000 in pension funds while he was working for the Rome City School District.
Hubal failed to obtain the proper state waiver after his retirement from the Rome Police Department, the Utica Observer-Dispatch reports. Instead, he collected $23,810 annually while receiving a full-time salary from the school district. Hubal had received a temporary wavier for one school year, but did not reapply after the wavier expired.
Hubel has already paid back $15,000 of the funds and will pay the remainder over the course of his five year probation. He will also be jailed for six months at Oneida County jail.
