Serial Rapes Linked to U. of Ill. Football Player

URBANA, Ill. — Former Illinois running back Steve Feagin has been arrested and charged with the rapes of three women from 1993 to 1995.

By 1995, several women had been stalked and assaulted by a serial rapist on the University of Illinois campus, the Chicago Tribune reports. Authorities now say DNA evidence links Feagin to these crimes.

The trail leading to Feagin began in December 2000, when Urbana police Sgt. Dan Morgan obtained a DNA warrant for a genetic profile listed in a federal database as “James Doe.” Eight years later, the profile was linked to a sexual assault in South Florida.

Urbana police veteran and cold-case investigator John Lockard then began scouring three years of Illini student directories for Florida residents. Lockard winnowed 37,665 names, developing a list of 54 suspects.

Feagins, who lived near two of the victims, was on the list. Investigators obtained a fresh DNA sample from Feagins, and arrested him.
