SEATTLE – A former employee at the University of Washington set himself on fire in front of a group of people in a campus plaza Oct. 30. The man died shortly after.
Witnesses said the 61-year-old man, whose name has not been released, walked out into Red Square plaza and poured gasoline over his body. One onlooker attempted to stop the man, but slipped on liquid before he could reach the victim.
The man then set himself on fire around 1 p.m. Many bystanders attempted to put out the fire with their clothing and water bottles. Others searched for fire extinguishers.
Police are unsure why the man set himself ablaze. He suffered second- and third-degree burns.
