Parents, students and teachers at a Florida middle school are upset with the local police, who recently conducted a “lockdown active shooter drill” inside the classroom with armed officers. Teachers also say they weren’t notified ahead of time, and the students reported being terrified in seeing the officers with their guns drawn.
As part of the unannounced drill, police went into the Jewett Middle Academy in Winter Haven, according to rt.com. Jason Geary, a spokesman for Polk County Schools, says it is standard procedure for parents, students or teachers not to be informed, while Winter Haven police chief Charlie Bird says it is a way for police to “evaluate a school’s response.”
After hearing the objections from the parents, though, Bird says in an email that the police department will be performing any further lockdown drills with unarmed uniformed officers.
