Florida Hospital Tightens Security after Infant Abduction

SANFORD, Fla. – The Florida Agency for Health Care Administration issued a 10-page report April 21 announcing a new change in security at Central Florida Regional Hospital in response to the abduction of a newborn that occurred three weeks prior.

On March 28, Jennifer Latham, 39, kidnapped a one-day-old infant from the maternity ward. When police stopped the SUV she was driving, Latham said the child was hers. Currently the suspect is being held on kidnapping and other charges.

Latham had been released but was ordered to wear an electronic tracking device, following her arrest. However, the suspect was re-arrested March 31 for lying to authorities about her criminal record.

The hospital will now require the following:

  • All visitors of the maternity ward must be issued a photo ID from the hospital
  • A 24-hour guard will be required to monitor the entrance of the maternity ward
  • Baby-sized bags will be inspected by a guard before leaving the ward
  • The maternity ward will be inspected every hour by a second guard who will make sure the area is secure
