Fla. Sheriff’s Office Targets Illegal Bus Passing with Sting Operation

CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla. — The Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office is conducting an undercover sting operation to catch drivers who illegally pass stopped school buses. Operation Safe Stop comes after an accident involving a Charlotte County school bus and a car. In that case, the driver of the car was not at fault.

Drivers who improperly pass a stopped bus can be fined $266, RSW Florida reports. In just one day, Charlotte County bus drivers reported seeing more than 70 people illegally pass their buses. According to police, the most common form of this violation is when drivers in oncoming traffic fail to heed a bus’ stop signals.

Officers had not yet cited any drivers on the first day of the operation.
