Fla. Mom Pays for Deputy at Child’s School

A north Florida mom has paid for a sheriff’s deputy to patrol her daughter’s school for two months and likely the rest of the year, reports the Daytona Beach News-Journal.

Laura Lauria has paid the Flagler County School District upfront for the cost of a deputy to staff Old Kings Elementary for about two months starting Jan. 14. The mother made a “verbal commitment” to pay for the deputy for the rest of the year after that, Superintendent Janet Valentine told the news outlet.

Old Kings has had a rotating deputy providing securrity. Deputies agree to take a special shift to visit the school on top of their regular duties. Staff and children do not see the same deputy every day.
