A community is reeling after a 15-year-old Florida student shot himself in front of a full classroom on Nov. 10.
The student, a freshman at Lecanto High School, reportedly shot himself in the head with a 9mm handgun in front of roughly 25 students at 10:30 a.m., according to wtsp.com.
The student survived and was able to briefly speak with a school resource officer before being airlifted to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Tampa.
The high school, along with the connected middle and elementary schools, were briefly locked down as police arrived on the scene and an investigation ensued. Counseling has been offered for students and classes were cancelled Nov. 11.
The lockdowns made for a chaotic scene as parents from three schools converged on the schools’ building complex to pick up their children. The Citrus County Sheriff’s Office said its active shooter training helped officers respond to the incident, but parents had never been involved in the exercises.
