Fire Marshal: 4 Mich. Schools Have 170 Violations

MUSKEGON HEIGHTS, Mich. — The state fire marshal’s office uncovered more than 170 violations at four Muskegon Heights schools in late June.

Inspectors found exit doors chained shut, broken windows replaced with Plexiglas and empty fire extinguishers in Martin Luther King Elementary, Edgewood Elementary, Muskegon Heights Middle and Muskegon Heights High schools, Michigan Live reports. The violations were the result of “several years of what I call benign neglect,” according to Donald Weatherspoon, the emergency manager who has taken over the school district.

The four schools are being leased by Mosaica Education Inc., which will operate them as charter schools while the district pays off a $12.5 million debt.
