Harvard University has been accused of violating Title VI of the Civil Rights Act by the federal Task Force to Combat Anti-Semitism. In a letter sent Monday, the task force threatened to withdraw all federal funding from the university if it fails to address issues of antisemitism on campus.

Title VI prohibits discrimination based on race, color, or national origin. The task force, formed under an executive order by President Donald Trump, cited the findings of a probe by the Department of Health and Human Services’ Office for Civil Rights.

Task Force to Combat Anti-Semitism’s Findings

The investigation uncovered a series of incidents and systemic shortcomings, including the following:

  • A majority of Jewish students reported experiencing bias or discrimination on campus.
  • 25% of Jewish students felt physically unsafe.
  • Jewish and Israeli students faced verbal and physical harassment, including instances of assault and being spat upon.
  • Antisemitic stickers and vandalism were reported across campus.

Additionally, the letter pointed to campus protests related to the Israel-Palestine conflict, alleging that some demonstrators called for acts of violence and denied Jewish and Israeli students access to campus spaces.

The task force accused Harvard of inaction, stating that the university has failed to defend all campus groups equally and has perpetuated “racial hierarchies.”

Potential Loss of Federal Funding

The letter explicitly warned that without significant changes, Harvard risks losing all federal financial resources.

“Failure to institute adequate changes immediately will result in the loss of all federal financial resources and continue to affect Harvard’s relationship with the federal government,” the letter stated.

It added, “Harvard may, of course, continue to operate free of federal privileges, and perhaps such an opportunity will spur a commitment to excellence that will help Harvard thrive once again.”

Harvard’s Response

Harvard strongly rejected the findings, responding with a statement emphasizing its ongoing efforts to combat antisemitism.

“Antisemitism is a serious problem, and no matter the context, it is unacceptable. Harvard has taken substantive, proactive steps to address the root causes of antisemitism in its community,” the university said through a spokesperson.

The university shared details of its report addressing antisemitism and anti-Israeli bias, highlighting actions taken to strengthen policies, enforce discipline, and promote dialogue on campus.

“Harvard is far from indifferent on this issue,” the statement read. “We remain committed to ensuring members of our Jewish and Israeli community are embraced, respected, and can thrive at Harvard.”

Harvard’s Measures to Address Antisemitism

The university has introduced several initiatives to address antisemitism and anti-Israeli bias, including:

  • Creating programs to foster constructive dialogue and viewpoint diversity.
  • Updating campus-use regulations and standardizing investigation procedures for disciplinary actions.
  • Expanding kosher dining options and integrating antisemitism training into educational workshops.
  • Launching efforts to promote respectful discourse and mutual understanding.

These measures were first announced in June 2024 by Harvard’s president, who expressed the institution’s commitment to addressing discrimination on campus.
