Federal Judge Recalls Michigan Crime List

Published: February 16, 2006

SAGINAW, Mich. – A federal judge has ordered the recall of all copies of a list of Michigan school employees with criminal convictions. School districts in the state are now barred from making any more personnel decisions based only on information provided by the list.

Critics say much of the information on the list is inaccurate and could damage the reputations of innocent workers and jeopardize their careers.

The American Federation of Teachers’ Michigan branch sought the restraining order, which went into effect Feb. 14 and will be in place for 10 days. A hearing to make the restraining order permanent is expected soon.

The temporary restraining order is similar to the one issued by an Ingham County judge.
