FCC Says Mobile Communications Growth Requires More Spectrum Broadband

Published: November 13, 2010

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) announced the release of “Mobile Broadband: The Benefits of Additional Spectrum”, a detailed forecast of mobile broadband market trends.

According to an FCC press release, the National Broadband Plan suggests that 500 megahertz (MHz) of new spectrum for wireless broadband be made available within 10 years to address rapid growth in mobile communications.

FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski said that if the commission did not update spectrum policies soon, American innovation and economic growth would be stifled.

Mobile data traffic in the United States will be 35 times higher in 2014 than it was in 2009, according to an article from Computerworld. If the FCC fails to make additional spectrum available, there could be a massive wireless spectrum shortage.
