HOUSTON – In April, a father holding his newborn daughter was shot with a stun gun by a security guard employed by Woman’s Hospital of Texas.
The confrontation began April 13 when William Lewis, 30, and his wife believed they were not well treated by the hospital. This prompted them to try to depart despite the staff telling them doctors would not allow them to exit.
A guard attempted to prevent the couple from leaving by shooting the father, who was holding the baby, with a Taser. All three then fell to the ground. The father claims the child sustained head trauma, but on the video, it is not clear if she landed on her head. It also isn’t clear if she received an electrical jolt from the stun gun.
Child Protective Services says she appears to be fine. The baby remains in protective custody because the parents have a history of domestic violence.
The incident was captured by a security camera, and the video was given to the Associated Press by Lewis.
The guard, who was an off-duty police officer, was not investigated by police, but Lewis was charged with child endangerment. Although Lewis was not indicted on that charge, he was charged with threatening the guard.
