A school bus in Las Vegas collided with a car on Thursday morning, leaving the driver of the car dead and 16 students with injuries.

Only one student sustained critical injuries in the crash and 13 of the hospitalized students are being treated for non-life threatening injuries, reports CNN.

Bailey Middle School Principal Nathalie Burgess released a statement shortly after the incident.

“Parents who have children on this bus will be contacted personally by the school once it has been determined who was on the bus,” Burgess said. “We appreciate your cooperation and patience with this matter and parents are encouraged not to go to the scene so appropriate emergency services can be provided. Please know that this is an active situation and additional updates will be provided as information becomes available.”

The district’s Crisis Response Team provided support for students at the school.

“This could have been worse,” District Police Department Captain Ken Young said. “We’re happy to report that all students have been accounted for, either at school or with their parents or at the hospital.”
