TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — The president of Florida A&M University resigned this past Wednesday, despite previously pledging to stay on the job after the college’s trustees gave him a vote of no confidence last month.
James Ammons’ resignation was initially supposed to take effect Oct. 11, the same month in which 11 defendants will go on trial for the hazing death of FAMU student and band major Robert Champion, the Associated Press reports. Ammons plans to exercise a provision in his contract that allows him to remain at the school as a member of the faculty.
However, Ammons’ resignation is now effective immediately, News Service of Florida reports. He will go on sabbatical and then return to the university as a tenured professor.
Ammons’ resignation follows the resignation of the university’s band director and the suspension of the Marching 100 band until 2013.
