FAMU: Drum Major’s Own Actions Led to His Hazing Death

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — In a 23-page motion seeking dismissal of a wrongful death lawsuit against the university, Florida A&M University officials said drum major Robert Champion’s own “imprudent, avoidable” actions were responsible for his hazing death.

The document said that as a leader in FAMU’s band, Champion should have refused to participate in the planned hazing that led to his death, USA Today reports. Champion’s parents have accused the university of not stopping the culture of hazing within its marching band.

Twelve former members of the band have been charged with felony hazing in Champion’s death.
