FAMU Band Suspended Through 2013

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — The Florida A&M University marching band will remain on suspension through the 2012-2013 school year. The university is working to create new rules following the hazing death of drum major Robert Champion.

The band must be restructured and there is not enough time to do so between now and autumn, according to university President James Ammons. Band director Julian White, who had been with the band for 40 years, recently stepped down due to pressure over Champion’s death, CNN reports.

Champion was killed during a ritual called “Crossing Bus C,” in which pledges try to move down the center of a bus while senior band members assault them.
