NEBRASKA — University of Nebraska (NU) officials are retracing the steps of a hacker who got into a computer database containing the records of 654,000 students and alumni, which included their Social Security numbers.
The database contains information for all NU campuses — one in Lincoln, two in Omaha and one in Kearney, the World-Herald reports. About 21,000 of the records held in the database contained bank account information.
The breach was discovered May 23 and was shut down within hours of its discovery, the Lincoln Journal Star reports. The data of employees and parents of students who applied for financial aid are also included in the records.
