EMU to Equip Police Force With TASERs

YPSILANTI, Mich. — Campus police officers at Eastern Michigan University (EMU) will soon be equipped with TASERs beginning in January.

EMU officials hope the TASERs will enhance the safety of the campus community by reducing the number of violent interactions with police. The university has purchased 33 TASERs that have cameras to record both video and audio once activated, documenting each time the less-lethal weapon is used, according to AnnArbor.com.

All officers will complete a one-day training course, teaching them about operating the weapon safely and scenarios on when it’s appropriate to deploy the TASER. Officers will receive their TASERs after completing the program.
