SUFFOLK, Va. — Bons Secours Mary Immaculate Hospital officials will notify roughly 5,000 patients of a security breach caused by two employees’ inappropriate access to patients’ electronic health records.
The hospital discovered the breach following an April 2013 audit of a patient’s medical record, which prompted an investigation, HealthDataManagement.com reports. During the investigation, authorities found that two certified nurse assistants accessed patients’ medical records from April 2012 to April 2013, in a manner that conflicted with their job functions and hospital procedures. Both employees have been terminated.
Meanwhile, police are investigating whether patient information we used illegally. For its part, the medical facility has offered to pay for identity theft protection services for affected individuals.
