Employees Charged in U. of Kansas Ticket Scandal

Published: November 10, 2010

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Five former University of Kansas employees have been charged with conspiring to steal tickets to school athletic events, valued at more than $2 million. Investigators say the conspirators made between $3 and 5 million selling the stolen tickets over the course of five years.

Associate athletic director Charlette Blubaugh, who oversaw the ticket office, allegedly began stealing tickets in 2005. She passed them off to other athletic department employees to sell. She and her husband, Thomas Blubaugh – a consultant to the ticket office – were both charged, the Chicago Tribune reports.

Athletic director Rodney Jones, former associate athletic director Ben Kirtland and systems analyst Kassie Liebsch were also charged. All five employees charged in the case are set to appear in federal court on Dec. 8.

The scandal angered donors, who, under an unpopular system created by athletic director Lew Perkins, had been forced to donate larger sums to the athletic department to get better seats at sporting events. Perkins, who was not involved in the illegal ticket sales, left his position a year before he had originally intended, saying the scandal was an embarrassing blemish on his long career.
